Globalization has been going on for a long time and has recently intensified. The circulation of goods, people, images, ideas, knowledge, etc., moves quickly and even reaches places once said to be 'far' and 'isolated.' places .'once said to be 'far' and 'isolated.' Distance and time shrink. Communication and transformation technology advances make what was once a dream now a reality. Human culture is changing rapidly. So is the resistance to it. The regime of truth is no longer one but plural and distributed everywhere. Anthropology is exciting and has recently explained these increasingly complex and complicated phenomena to the general public so that the general public can be more comfortable dealing with them. The Department of Social Anthropology FISIP USU is well aware of this great challenge, so regarding the Vision of FISIP USU and the Vision of the Universitas Sumatera Utara, for the next five years, The Department of Social Anthropology emphasizes its vision: "To become a study program that academic excellence in the knowledge of local culture and hybrid culture of a Sumatran society that can compete at the global level in 2025". Sumatran society is the target of this period because so many social units in it need to be understood, understood, and understood practical (policy) interests. The characteristic of the anthropological approach that tends to be inductive is emic in research; it allows this to be done. Especially under the auspices of FISIP USU and USU, which is currently very strong in its commitment to achieving the best predicate, the Department of Social Anthropology is increasingly confident in achieving its realistic vision.
