History
1980-1981
The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FISIP USU), was officially established in 1980 as part of the development of USU's higher education institutions. At its inception, FISIP USU only offered two departments: the Department of Public Administration and the Department of Communication Science. These departments aimed to meet the demand for professionals in government administration and communication in Indonesia.
FISIP USU grew by adding new study programs and enhancing academic and research quality as it progressed. The faculty has played a crucial role in supporting the advancement of social and political sciences at regional and national levels.
1983-1984
FISIP USU continuously expanded and strengthened its academic capacity as a newly established faculty. Entering the years 1983-1984, the faculty expanded by introducing two new departments:
The Department of Sociology studies social dynamics, community interactions, and various aspects of social change.
The Department of Social Welfare focuses on social policies, community empowerment, and social interventions for vulnerable groups.
Additionally, during the same period, the Department of Anthropology, previously under the Faculty of Letters at Universitas Sumatera Utara, was officially transferred to FISIP USU. This transition enriched the faculty’s social science studies, offering a more comprehensive approach to understanding culture and social structures.
With the increasing number of departments, students, and lecturers, FISIP USU solidified its role as a center for education and research in social and political sciences in North Sumatra and Indonesia.
1996
In 1996, FISIP USU continued to expand to meet the needs of the job market and higher education in social and political sciences. On April 18, 1996, based on Decree No. 105/Dikti/Kep/1996 issued by the Directorate General of Higher Education, the faculty officially launched the Diploma 3 (D3) Program in Tax Administration. This program was designed to produce professionals in taxation with in-depth knowledge of tax regulations, fiscal administration, and tax practices in both the public and private sectors. With the establishment of this program, FISIP USU broadened its educational scope, producing graduates equipped to compete in the workforce.
2001
In 2001, FISIP USU expanded its academic scope by opening the Political Science Study Program at the undergraduate (S1) level. This program was established to meet educational and professional demands in politics, governance, and public policy. The Political Science Study Program at FISIP USU is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of political theories, governance systems, international relations, and political dynamics at local, national, and global levels. With the addition of this program, FISIP USU strengthened its position as a leading center for social and political science studies, contributing to academic and practical developments in Indonesian politics.
2009
In 2009, FISIP USU continued its academic expansion by launching the Business Administration Study Program. This program was designed to meet the growing demands of the business and industrial sectors, focusing on business management, entrepreneurship, marketing strategies, and corporate governance. The establishment of the Business Administration Study Program further expanded FISIP USU’s academic scope in social, political, and economic sciences, contributing to the development of graduates ready to compete in the business world, both in the public and private sectors.
