Undergraduate Program in Social Anthropology

Established in 1986, the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) Undergraduate Program in Social Anthropology is a study program that focuses on applying classical and contemporary anthropological theories, concepts, and methods.

Students are taught to have sensitivity and willingness to overcome anthropological problems in society, such as poverty, climate change, social conflict, and marginalized communities, with the assistance of exceptional lecturers who are highly educated and nationally certified. Graduates can pursue careers as ethnographers with specifications as young researchers, consultants, community developers, entrepreneurial activists, and cultural bureaucrats or inspirers of cultural promotion.

History

1983

The Social Anthropology Study Program was opened based on the Decree of the Director General of Higher Education of the Ministry of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 31/DJ/Kep/1983. Still, student enrollment began in the 1980/1981 academic year. At that time, the Department of Anthropology was located at the Faculty of Letters, USU. The initiators of the opening of this department were Prof. Dr. T. Amin Ridwan (alm), who was then Dean of the USU Faculty of Letters, Prof. Dr. Ny. Chalida Fachruddin, and several Indonesian anthropological figures such as Prof. Dr. Koentjaraningrat and Prof. Dr. Payung Bangun.
