The Social Welfare Studies Program of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Indonesian Addiction Counselors Association (IKAI), held a National Seminar themed “Enhancing Social Welfare for Individuals with Substance Abuse Disorders through Social Rehabilitation Programs and Interprofessional Collaboration in North Sumatra.” The event took place in the Multipurpose Hall of FISIP USU on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

The seminar was inaugurated by USU Rector, Prof. Dr. Muryanto Amin, S.Sos., M.Si., who highlighted the significance of the theme, which reflects a deep concern for addressing the serious challenges faced by individuals affected by substance abuse. He emphasized the widespread social and welfare impacts of this issue on the community.

Dr. Hatta Ridho, S.Sos., MSP, Dean of FISIP USU, explained that the event aimed to educate students, discouraging them from seeking pleasure through drugs. Additionally, it sought to foster collaboration between FISIP USU and rehabilitation centers, enabling stakeholders to achieve more tangible results.

In his presentation, North Sumatra Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Agung Setya Imam Effendi, S.H., S.I.K., M.Si., revealed alarming data, noting that Indonesia faces a major drug problem and regards narcotics as a common enemy. He explained that drug abuse impacts not only security but also the economy, as it affects the quality of human resources.

The seminar concluded with the signing of an MoU between FISIP USU and institutions such as IPWL (Institutions for Social Welfare Services), LRKM (Rehabilitation Centers), and LKS NAPZA (Social Institutions for Drug Abuse). The collaboration aims to assist in the recovery of drug users while raising awareness among students to prevent drug use.
