The basketball team of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FISIP USU), achieved remarkable success at the 2025 USU Basketball League (UBL), securing six awards, including the men’s championship title. The final match was held at the Cikal USU Basketball Court in early December 2025.
The FISIP men’s team emerged as champions, ending a long wait since the competition’s inception. Meanwhile, the women’s team demonstrated strong consistency by finishing as runners-up, reinforcing FISIP’s position as one of the leading forces in university-level basketball competitions.
FISIP’s dominance was further highlighted through several individual awards. Star player Yobel was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the Final, while Nazwa Adam earned the title of Most Improved Player (MIP). The team’s coach, Adil Pulungan—an alumnus of FISIP USU—was recognized as Best Coach for both the men’s and women’s categories. In addition, FISIP students received the Best Supporter award.
One of the men’s team players, Ramazuan, revealed that the key to their success lay in disciplined communication throughout the game.
“Our main strategy is to always speak to each other loudly. It’s a simple communication technique, but it’s a standard we consistently maintain. It keeps us connected, both in offense and defense,” he said.
Beyond technical aspects, mental preparation and team vision played a crucial role in FISIP’s performance this season. A representative of the women’s team, Elisabeth, stated that all players shared a strong commitment to achieving a “double title,” although they ultimately secured second place as runners-up.
“The key to this achievement is not about individuals, but about how vision and teamwork are built. We want to prove that FISIP has high standards in USU basketball,” Elisabeth explained.
This achievement would not have been possible without the support of various stakeholders, from faculty leadership policies to alumni contributions. Alumni played a significant role, both in providing technical guidance through coaching and offering moral and material support from preparation to competition. This success is expected to serve as momentum for athlete regeneration within FISIP USU, ensuring the continuation of its championship tradition in the future.
