At the beginning of its establishment in 1980, the Faculty of Social and Political Science was still a department of community knowledge, which was grafted onto the Faculty of Law at the Universitas Sumatera Utara. A year later, the Department of Community Knowledge changed to the Department of Social Sciences (JIS) and remained in the Faculty of Law.

1983

Following the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0535/0/83 in 1983 concerning the type and number of departments in the faculties within the Universitas Sumatera Utara, the USU Faculty of Social Sciences and Political Sciences has six departments, namely: 1. Department of Sociology 2. Department of Social Welfare 3. Department of Anthropology 4. Department of Public Administration 5. Communication Science Department 6. Major MKDU (General Basic Course)

1987

At the beginning of the establishment of FISIP, the selection of majors was carried out in semester VII. This situation lasted until the 1986/1987 academic year. The new majors were only selected when registering for entrance testing in the 1987/1988 academic year.

1994

In the process of its development in 1994-1997, the Department of Communication Science opened two programs, namely: 1. Journalism concentration 2. Public Relations/Humas. Students must choose a journalism or public relations concentration in the fourth semester.

2003

In terms of naming, the name of the communication science department, which was used since its establishment, had to be changed in 2003. The naming is no longer a department but a department. This is following government regulation No. 56 of 2003 concerning the Application of State-Owned Legal Entities to the Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU) and USU trustee decision No. 1/SK/MWA/1/2005 dated January 8, 2005, concerning USU by laws.
