amily resilience is the primary key to preventing drug abuse from an early age. Recognizing this, the Social Welfare Study Program of the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), in collaboration with the Indonesian Association of Addiction Counselors (IKAI) of North Sumatra and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), held an intensive training titled “Anti-Drug Family Resilience” from June 15–17, 2023.

The activity, which took place at the Aula Pertemuan of FISIP USU, focused on empowering families as the main support system in countering the influence of addictive substances. Through the perspective of social welfare studies, families were provided with effective communication techniques and strengthened parenting patterns capable of building children’s psychological immunity.

“Family-based interventions are the most effective strategy. Collaboration between academics from USU, practitioners from IKAI, and the support of international standards from UNODC ensures that the materials delivered today have a strong scientific and practical foundation,” said a representative of the organizers.

This training is expected to create a family resilience model that can be adapted by the wider community to reduce the prevalence of drug abuse, particularly in the North Sumatra region.
