The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Sumatera Utara (FISIP USU), was officially established in 1980 as part of the development of USU's higher education institutions. At its inception, FISIP USU only offered two departments: the Department of Public Administration and the Department of Communication Science. These departments aimed to meet the demand for professionals in government administration and communication in Indonesia. FISIP USU grew by adding new study programs and enhancing academic and research quality as it progressed. The faculty has played a crucial role in supporting the advancement of social and political sciences at regional and national levels.

Entering the years 1983-1984, the faculty expanded by introducing two new departments: The Department of Sociology studies social dynamics, community interactions, and various aspects of social change. The Department of Social Welfare focuses on social policies, community empowerment, and social interventions for vulnerable groups. Additionally, during the same period, the Department of Anthropology, previously under the Faculty of Letters at Universitas Sumatera Utara, was officially transferred to FISIP USU. This transition enriched the faculty’s social science studies, offering a more comprehensive approach to understanding culture and social structures. With the increasing number of departments, students, and lecturers, FISIP USU solidified its role as a center for education and research in social and political sciences in North Sumatra and Indonesia.
